Wow…. we seem to be doing a lot of these lately. Another very busy Sunday has come and gone and once again, the Fincastle Gym Leaders were unable to escape without parting ways with another gym badge. Gym Leader Joel started the challenges by restoring a little honor to the Grass-type deck in a match with Erik F. The Gym Leader piled conditions on Erik’s big hitting Fire-types and unfortunately for Erik, the coin flips that could have saved him did not go his way. As Joel likes to joke with those who play the deck, it is as close as he hopes anyone ever comes to finding out what it is like to be slowly devoured by a fly trap. Next up, Gym Leader Marthe had to take on the trainer that has suddenly become the biggest threat to all of the Gym Leader decks.
Brycen F. came at one of the most consistent and quick hitting Gym Leader decks, the Lightning-type. As we’ve stating before, Brycen has developed a strong understanding of not only how to play his deck but how most of the other decks in the format work. In game 1, he was very precise in choosing early knockouts that would slow the Gym Leader down. By disabling her set up, he was able to take control of the game and win rather easily. Game 2 turned on Brycen and Gym Leader Marthe set up quickly and did to him what he pulled off in game 1. With the match even at one game each, Brycen again capitalized on the speed of his deck to take control early. Again, he was very careful and precise in his choices of whom to damage/catch and was able to stay ahead in prizes and take game 3. The victory nets Brycen his 2nd gym badge which is sure to be followed by several more. Excellent job, Brycen!
The rise of trainers like Brycen and fellow senior, Hunter, definitely give the Gym Leaders something extra to look forward to at league. We enjoy all challenges, but being challenged at such a high level, win or lose, is truly the most fun for us. As we’ve said many times, we do not go easy on any challengers. So when you are able to compete with us and even defeat us, it means you are improving. Everyone likes to win, but as we can attest to, you cannot win every time. Being competitive, having fun while doing so and being gracious whether you win or lose is what we strive to pass along to our trainers.
With the new set, we are over-hauling several decks (and creating a few new ones). We hope to have most, if not all of the gym decks ready by next Sunday. If you want to battle a certain Gym Leader and the deck is not ready, then you may wait until the next week or sign up for another leader. We know that many of you are waiting and ask for your patience. We have new players each week and it important to us that we spend time helping them look through their cards and teaching them to play. We will get to you as soon as we can. Play as many games as you can while you wait and keep earning the promo materials. See you at the Gym!
