Where have we seen these names before? Another busy Sunday at the Fincastle Pokemon Gym saw two of our Gym Leaders standing in the path of two of our dynamic seniors. Both Hunter H and Brycen F have been on a roll lately as their level of play continues to improve and their command of the mechanics of the game increases. Not good news for the Gym Leaders….. But as we’ve said before, being truly challenged by players that love the game as much as we do is what makes it fun for us. On to the accolades!
First up was Hunter as he took on the Steel Gym Leader deck, played this time by Marthe. This test was one of a different type for Hunter, as he had to figure out how not to get “decked out”, as opposed to out-hitting his opponent as he normally would. Hunter was quick to respond to the challenge. He figured out how to survive long enough to take game 1. Game 2 did not start as well, but he battled back to almost take it. He was short 1 energy card to finish off the ants and had to watch his last cards be “devoured” for the game. He played conservatively (as you have to against Durant) in game 3 and was able to set up a good attacker and take the game and the match. A challenge of this sort is meant to test your ability to adjust and think on your feet. Hunter did this to near perfection. Excellent job, Hunter!
While Hunter was busy adjusting his strategies against Marthe, Brycen and Gym Leader Joel began a more traditional “slug-fest” between EX’s as Brycen took on the Fire Gym Leader. This match was very straight forward… set up fast and start hitting. The “burned” special condition was the edge the Gym Leader needed to maintain the upper hand in this match. However, Brycen was able to avoid the extra damage by coin flips at key points throughout the match. Brycen made excellent decisions at points in both games where the wrong play would have cost him. He took the match in straight (but very close) games. Excellent job, Brycen!
The victories for Hunter and Brycen net both trainers their 3rd Gym Badge. For the first time since Gym Leader Austin joined us, it looks like a trainer (in this case 2 trainers) may run the tables and make a push to earn all the badges at the Gym. Austin did not obtain them all (as he surely would have), but joined our ranks instead. Will either Brycen or Hunter be the first to do so? Between the two of them, they have defeated 6 different Gym Leaders, as both players have earned 3 different badges. One more win by either trainer will tie them for the most badges ever earned at the Gym. The path will not be an easy one, as some of our toughest leaders still remain. The Gym Leaders can’t wait for the next challenge as a very interesting race between trainers is developing. Stay tuned, as we are sure that this will get interesting! See you at the Gym!
