Looking back over our last few months of posts, you can see a theme that developed recently at the Gym. Gym challenges have been dominated by our two more experienced trainers, Hunter and Brycen. The gym leaders will by no means make it easy on them, but also know that it is only a matter of time before they earn all 9 badges. What we have not seen, however, is any of our younger trainers breakout and earn that first badge. During the last few weeks, several trainers have come close in a few challenges. On Sunday, we fielded 3 challenges and someone finally broke through.
Gym Leader Joel took on brothers, Jacob and Matthew, who both challenged for the Grass-type badge. The Grass-types at the moment do not have any “big-hitters”, so to make an effective grass deck, you have to look to “Special Conditions.” I think Jacob and Matthew learned how truly frustrating Special Conditions can be. In both matches, the gym leader left their active attackers “poisoned” and either “confused” or “paralyzed”. They watched as their attackers stayed locked for most of the game, taking small amounts of damage, turn after turn, until they were knocked out. Both trainers were good sports through the matches and their decks are much improved. While we are not going to tell you how to defeat our decks (you already know to choose the type advantage), we suggest that you look to the left side of this paragraph before signing up for the Grass deck again.
For the last challenge of the day, Isaac B took on the Steel-type gym leader (Joel again). The gym leader’s deck focuses on several big Steel-types that are capable of taking damage. Partnered with Klinklang, they become even tougher when all the energy in moved off (with Klinklang‘s Ability), all the damage is removed with “Max Potion” and then the energy is moved right back to where it started. Did I say something about being capable of taking a hit? Well, Isaac said, “Say hello to my little friend!” (say it with an accent). In game 1, Gym Leader Joel got the set up he needed to begin wearing down Issac’s field and start “tanking” his own pokemon. The next thing the gym leader knew, his 180 HP Registeel was gone in one shot and his tank strategy was looking more like an AMC Pacer (kids, look it up). Issac closed game 1 out in a little more than 6 minutes. Ouch. Gym Leader Joel went first in game 2 and again got a good start. However, as before, several turns into the game, the gym leader was scrambling for ideas. Gym Leader Joel kept up in the prize exchange and with 4 prize cards remaining, had an opportunity to KO a damaged Reshiram EX and take the upper hand in the game. However, it would require 2 “heads” on a coin flip attack from Klinklang (talk about a last resort). Joel flipped….. double “tails”. Sweet revenge for Isaac, who lost a close match in a Grass-type challenge to Joel on a flip for a “burned” pokemon. Isaac closed out the game and the match on the next turn with the KO and earned his first badge at the Fincastle Pokemon Gym. Great job, Isaac!
Isaac becomes only the 12th trainer at the Gym to ever defeat a gym leader. Welcome to the “Wall of Fame”! Its back to the drawing board for Gym Leader Joel. As is tradition, whenever a Gym deck is defeated in such a dominating fashion, it is dismantled and rebuilt. The Steel deck will be available next Sunday in a new form. Remember, these badges are not gifts (meaning we don’t just hand them out). They are there for you to earn. You may lose some close matches along the way and it may take some time to win one, but you will know what you accomplished when you win one. We look forward to more exciting challenges next week. See you at the Gym!
