Congratulations Hunter, v7.0!

He’s almost there……  Hunter H took a huge step today towards completing his sweep of all of the gym leaders at the Fincastle Pokemon Gym.  For the last 2 weeks, he has been waiting on the construction of a Water-type deck, while the gym leaders have been waiting for cards to arrive in the mail (buying cards online right at Christmas time turns out is not the fastest way to get cards you need in a timely fashion).  Well, the cards arrived yesterday and the water deck was built this morning.  In true Gym Leader fashion, Gym Leader Logan stepped up to take the challenge with a deck he only played twice prior to the challenge.  What followed was an interesting back and forth battle that came down to a pretty big gamble.

In game 1, Gym Leader Logan went first and got off to a steady but strong start.  Hunter tried to keep pace, but Logan set up and piled energy on Keldeo EX, enabling him to one-hit most of Hunter’s field.  Hunter kept in the game by countering with a Mewtwo EX, but it wasn’t enough and Logan took game 1.  Hunter went first in game 2 and got a good start this time, while Logan struggled to set up.  Hunter kept attacking throughout the game while Logan raced to keep his EX‘s alive.  Similar to game 1, Logan was able to counter late in the game, but Hunter was too far ahead and eventually took game 2.  In the decisive final squirtlegame, Logan went first and had a decent start, but nothing to search with other than “Professor Juniper”, which normally would be good were it not for the 2 “Rare Candies” in his hand, forcing him into the decision of using the Supporter or top-drawing until something else better came along.  Logan went for it.  The gamble turned out to be a crippling decision.  The discard of the “Candies” revealed that his other was trapped in the prize cards.  Ouch.  Logan dug deep into his deck while Hunter slowly set up so see the painful realization that the game was over after the opening turns.  Logan hung in and kept searching for a way out of an unwinnable situation, missing several “Super Scoop Ups” along the way, while Hunter’s set up finally caught up and gave him the upper hand.  Logan dug so deep that he decked out before Hunter could take all 6 prize cards.  A little anti-climatic finish to a great challenge, but that’s the way it goes sometimes when 2 great players square off.  Good fortune goes a long ways.

While the last game was a little on the ugly side, Hunter stuck it out and earned his 7th gym badge at the Fincastle Pokemon Gym.  With the toughest leader at the Gym out of his way, all that remains is the Fire-type leader (Joel) and the Dragon-type leader (Georgia) for Hunter to collect them all.  Outstanding job, Hunter!  We can’t wait until he earns his next challenge….. we’re bracing ourselves already!  See you at the Gym!
