Congratulations Brycen (v6.0) and Hunter (v8.0)!

After two weeks off for the Regional Championships, the Fincastle Gym Leaders had quite the array of challengers awaiting their return at the Gym.  We jumped right into the fray, taking on a total of 5 Gym Challenges on the day.  Gym Leader Logan completed a routine defense of  the Water-type badge, while Gym Leader Marthe had a much tougher time in holding off an attempt on the Psychic-type badge.  Gym Leader Joel was the one on the hot seat today, as he took on 2 attempts for the Fire-type badge and 1 for the Steel-type badge.  When it was all said and done, Joel had to pay out some badges.

Gym Leader Joel was able to successfully defend the Fire badge once on the day.  However, waiting for the Gym Leader were the league’s 2 top trainers, Hunter and Brycen.  While Brycen was looking to narrow the margin between he and Hunter in the race for all 9, Hunter was looking for the finish line.  With 7 badges already under his belt, all that remained for him are an under-powered Fire-type set and the league’s youngest leader and her dragons.

With the release of the cards that make up the deck we just featured (Blastoise & Keldeo), Pokemon has made most of the Fire-types irrelevant in competitive play because of their Water-type weakness.  The Plasma Storm set that is coming out in a few weeks offers some interesting cards that can eliminate weaknesses which will boost many types that suffer from their weaknesses at the moment.  Unfortunately for the Gym Leader, they’re not here yet.  There’s not much to say about the match with Hunter for the Fire badge other than he played a deck that is fairly new to him very well.  The Gym Leader has dodged the water weakness with an unlikely Fire-type, Camerupt, because of its ability to paralyze and burn, locking and damaging the opponent.  To compound the damage, Volcarona sits comfortably on the bench, increasing the damage from the automatic burn condition.  Victini joins in the party to try to ensure that the paralyze condition sticks after the coin flip.  Well, Keldeo simply laughs at their efforts.  Keldeo’s “Rush In” frees it from any status problem and allows it to jump right back in and attack.  The Gym Leader was able to KO a lone EX in each game, but neither game was close.  Hunter cruised to victory with style and claimed his 8th badge.  All that remains in his way of completing the first ever sweep of the Gym Leaders is the mighty Georgia and her Dragon-type deck.  She might have to put the metal bowl back on her head for this one (see earlier post about Georgia if you don’t know what we’re talking about).

Fresh off one crushing defeat, the assault of talented players continued as Joel dusted off his Steel deck to take on Brycen (you guys are hard on an old man!).  This deck provided an interesting challenge for Brycen, as it can lock your attacker with Cobalion or spread damage with Registeel.  The key is to get the upper hand quickly, as long games tend to go in favor of the Steel deck.  In game 1, Byrcen did exactly that.  He set up several attackers, while stalling the Gym Leader with “catchers”.  Joel tried to slow Brycen’s momentum by “hammering” away some energies, but hit tails on ALL attempts.  Brycen eventually took game 1.  Game 2 started off better for the Gym Leader as Brycen played his entire hand away and was forced to top draw for several turns.  Joel wore down Brycen’s field before he finally drew out of the bad/no hand.  Brycen battled back, taking the game to 2 prizes each.  Joel needed an energy and had a “Juniper”, but only six cards left in the deck, so he went with the “hammers” that he hunted back out of the discard and finally hit a “heads”, stalling Brycen from attacking for the turn.  Brycen was cleverly holding on to a single energy card for just that occasion.  He attached and KO’d a damaged Registeel for the win.  Great job Brycen!  We’ve talked many times with players about how it is not always necessary to play cards just because they are in your hand.  Brycen listened and it won him his 6th badge at the Gym.

We had lots of requests for battles today.  Be patient guys and we will get to you all as quickly as we can.  We will jump right back into the challenges on Sunday in 2 weeks.  We hope that you all are as excited as we are for the Plasma Storm pre-release next week.  The event will be in place of league next Sunday, so we hope you can all come out.  We’ll post details on the event on our next post.  See you at the Gym!
