Congratulations Jeff D, v2.0!

The Fincastle Pokemon Gym is in the middle of a very busy stretch in the Play!Pokemon season.  The State Championship series is in full swing with tournaments taking place on Saturdays over 3 consecutive weeks across the country.  The Gym Leaders have been both competing in and officiating over these events.  On the last 2 Sunday’s, after some very tiring days at States, we’ve returned home and jumped right into a full slate of challengers awaiting the various leaders at the Gym.  The gym leaders have taken on 8 different challengers over the last 2 weeks and have held their own, but not without some close calls.

Last Sunday, Alex D won the opening game against the Dragon-type leader (Joel, filling in for Georgia).  However, Joel took the final 2 games and held off the tricky Darkrai deck.  Logan and Marthe successfully defended the Water and Lightning decks as well.  This Sunday, Gym Leader Joel was on the ropes again as Eli T came after the Steel deck with some heavy hitting Fire EX’s.  However, the new Klinklang from Plasma Storm adds a whole new level of difficulty to the Steel deck, as Eli found out and the gym leader escaped.  Leaders Logan, Georgia and Marthe all successfully defended attempts on their decks.

Gym Leader Joel had time to field 1 more challenge on the day, so he took on Jeff D who was gunning for the Fire type deck.  The new set of cards has added some versatility and extra “firepower” to the Fire types, giving the gym leader several decks to choose from (a luxury not usually there for the traditionally shallow pool of Fire type cards).  So, what better deck to play in a battle of a couple of “old dudes” than the most old school fire deck still in the format…. Reshiboar!

trainThe Reshiram/Emboar deck came face to face with its new Water type counterpart, Blastoise/Keldeo EX (kind of a steam engine vs the bullet train match-up….. but never count out the old steam engine).  Joel went 1st in game 1 and was on the attack quickly.  Poised to take a Keldeo EX and a good chunk of energy off the field, Joel’s game was deflated by a well-timed “Gold Potion”, saving the EX and the game, as it rapidly swung back in Jeff’s favor.  The ensuing storm of Keldeo’s was too much for the old engine and Jeff took game 1.  Joel went 1st in game 2 and again went after the quick set up.  The advantage of going 1st was all that was needed in this game, as Joel got a 2nd-turn Emboar and “Blue Flare” for a KO on Jeff’s only Pokemon.  Game 3 was similar to game 2, except for 1 major difference…. Joel went 2nd.  The 2nd turn of the game saw Jeff get out of his single “Squirtle” start and survive the 2nd turn attack coming from the gym leader.  Joel had the early lead, but again Jeff played the “Gold Potion” at the perfect moment, buying enough time to get Blastoise in play and start streaming the Keldeo‘s.  Joel kept up in the prize exchange, but the Water weakness was too much as Jeff took his last prize and the match while Joel had 2 prizes to go.  It made for a very interesting match to play the format’s former power house against its newest.  The win nets Jeff his 2nd badge at the Gym.  Great job, Jeff!

Everyone at the Gym is doing a great job building decks.  Many of the decks we’ve played over the last 2 weeks are very solid and are maybe a card or 2 away from earning some of you a gym badge.  We’ve offered some deck advice to several of you and suggest that you try out some of the changes that we recommend.  Keep battling and check back in a day or 2 for some exciting news!  See you at the Gym!
