Fincastle Gym Roars Towards 300th Challenge

The Fincastle Gym Leaders have been busy doing a little re-organizing on this site, which unfortunately has meant few posts.  The first visible change for all of you is the addition of the “Gym Leader Challenge” tab above.  The Gym Leader Challenge is the focal point of our league.  As far as we can tell, the Fincastle Gym is the only league in the country (perhaps the world), that offers this format flyas well as our own custom-made badges for you to win.  While not everyone may understand the work that goes into winning a gym leader challenge, we at the Gym do.  We want you to be able to find your post and show it off to your friends or just enjoy reading it again for yourself.  They should now be in the above tab in order from the very first one to the most recent.  With that being said, we are flying right along towards challenge #300.  Lets see how things stand.

To date we have now completed 251 challenges.  Overall, the Gym Leaders’ record in these challenges is 210 wins and 41 losses (an 83.7% win percentage).  That’s right, 41 badges have been won at the Gym by 17 different trainers.  Here’s a quick look at the breakdown by decks.

  • Steel – 14 wins, 7 losses (66.7%)
  • Water – 26 wins, 1 loss (92.3%)
  • Dragon – 8 wins, 1 loss (88.9%)
  • Fire – 28 wins, 5 losses (84.8%)
  • Grass – 33 wins, 7 losses (82.5%)
  • Psychic – 36 wins, 8 losses (81.8%)
  • Dark – 16 wins, 2 losses (88.9%)
  • Lightning – 26 wins, 8 losses (76.5%)
  • Fighting – 23 wins, 2 losses (92.0%)

The main reason to look at theses numbers is to get an idea as to the strength of each deck, keeping in mind that most of these decks have changed drastically since the beginning.  Changes in the format force the creation of new decks, as we keep all of the decks within the boundaries of the current format.  As decks have been defeated, they are often rebuilt to showcase different ideas and strategies.

Gym Leaders Marthe’s Psychic deck and Joel’s Grass deck continue to be the most frequently challenged decks.  Joel’s Steel deck currently has the worst overall record, as early variations of it were brutalized by what was once a Fire-type heavy format.  As we’ve mentioned recently, this deck received a huge boost from the Plasma Storm set, so it may have better days in front of it.  Gym Leaders Joel and Logan are neck and neck for the top spot with their Fighting and Water type decks, while our newest leader, Georgia, is in hot pursuit with her Dragon types.

One of the biggest things we noticed while re-organizing was the number of different players we have had at the Gym.  The first badges won were by players that we have not seen in a long time.  Reviewing the posts brought back  memories of games and times with trainers that were not only great players, but awesome people.  We know that with time, people move on to other things (or sometimes other places).  The Gym goes on without them, but what many of them brought to the overall atmosphere of our league can never be replaced.  If everyone that ever played at the league returned for one day, we could not seat everyone.  In fact, we would break the fire marshal’s occupancy rule at the library.

As we get closer to challenge #300, we would guess that the question on everyone’s mind is, “What will the prize be?”.  Challenge #100 saw Chris L take home a HGSS binder with a copy of every league promo card that we had at the time.  Challenge # 200 saw Addison M take home a hefty collection of EX’s, Primes and Full Art cards.  I guess we will have to top that somehow for #300.  So, how about this…. how about a fully constructed, sleeved, tournament ready deck, constructed by the Gym Leaders!  We will have to wait until #300 gets closer and see where the format is (and more importantly, what happens with the next rotation) before we can decide what it will be.  We want it to be something really good/competitive but also something that you can get some mileage out of.

There you have it.  We are still spending a lot of time going through our site and re-organizing previous posts and information.  As we get the changes finalized, we hope the end product is a better site for you to enjoy.  Just bear with us, as reviewing 215 posts is a little time-consuming.  Speaking of posts, we have finalized the format for “League Champion” challenges and will post that shortly.  Check back soon.  See you at the Gym!
