Congratulations Alex (v2.0) and Hunter (3 of 4)

yayuhSunday was another busy day at the Gym.  With all of the Gym Leaders back from last week’s pre-release, we had a full slate of challengers.  Gym leaders Joel and Marthe both took on challenges for gym badges.  Joel took on Hunter in the 3rd stage of his attempt on the Final Four.  The day ended with a very entertaining match that resulted in another badge earned.

Gym Leader Marthe successfully defended a challenge from Iain M, who made his first attempt for a badge at the Gym.  Iain definitely has the basis for a good deck, but as he found out in the challenge, needs more consistency.  Despite putting up a good battle, Marthe won the match in straight games.  A stronger line of Trainer Item/Supporter cards will definitely get Iain another step closer to winning his 1st badge.  That’s one of the goals of the challenges, to help our trainers improve their decks.

While Marthe was finishing her battle, Joel brought out the 3rd of the Final Four decks for Hunter to challenge, the Power deck.  Hunter definitely has some good mojo on his side in this 4-part battle, as this game did not turn out to be much of a game.  Gym Leader Joel got a slow start, which does not normally hurt this deck, as it is capable of making a quick turn-around, once set up, with the hardest hitting EX in the game, Rayquaza EX.  However, that quick turn stalls where it stands when 2 of the 3 EX’s are prized.  Hunter hit on enough energy early to KO the only Rayquaza EX the Gym Leader could get out.  The advantage of having to only face these decks once, instead of a best 2 of 3, has definitely played to Hunter’s advantage.  Hunter has only 1 deck left, the Skill deck, to complete the sweep and become a league champion.

Following Hunter’s win, Gym Leader Joel took on Alex D in an attempt on the Grass-type deck.  Loaded up with Fire types, it seemed that Alex was ready to claim victory before we played to best 2 of 3 challenge.  As many who have tried out the various Grass decks have found out, you can get caught off guard with some often over-looked Pokemon, especially if you are not used to seeing Special Conditions.  Game 1 saw Joel get a quick start, but then stall out while gortop-drawing and hoping to find that Supporter card that just would not make an appearance.  Alex escaped this game with a few close calls, but with relative ease.  Game 2 was the opposite, as Alex started with the bad hand and in 2 turns, his lone Reshiram fell to the speedy Accelgor from the Gym Leader, thanks to the added “poison” damage from the Virbank Gym stadium card.   Then came Game 3.

From time to time, we play games at the Gym that make us wish we were set up with a video camera and YouTube site so that we could share these games with all of you.  Throughout this game, Alex kept loading up various beefy, Fire-type EX’s, only to see Joel “catch” them and lock them with conditions, while damage accumulated quickly from the “poisoned” condition.  Alex kept thinking through the lock, switching out attackers when he could to avoid KO’s and removing the Gym Leader’s “Virbank” stadiums from play (which was probably the deciding factor in the game).  The game drew even at 1 prize card each, as both players tried to keep their heavily damaged fields out of their opponent’s reach.  Gym Leader Joel, who had kept a fairly constant stream of Accelgor coming at Alex all game, finally ran out of luck, allowing Alex to take the last prize card.

Great job Alex!  The win nets Alex his 2nd badge at the Gym.  While he has a way to go to get all 9, Alex is off to a great start.  Keep up the good work.  We hope everyone is fine tuning their decks and practicing to get ready for our Battle Roads tournament.  Anyone looking for help with a deck should seek out a gym leader at our next league day.  See you at the Gym!
