Trading after Chespin League Challenge

This past Sunday was a double dip of “firsts” for the Fincastle Gym.  The Gym Leaders traveled to Charlotte, NC on Saturday to sample its first League Challenge of the 2013-14 season.  On Sunday, the Fincastle Pokemon Gym hosted its first-ever League Challenge.  The Gym Leaders had a great time at both events, seeing a nice mix of decks on both days, which always make for a more interesting event.

The Fincastle Gym Leaders narrowly missed the “sweep” on Saturday in Charlotte.  Gym Leader Georgia continued to play strong as she cruised to a 1st place finish in the Junior Division.  Gym Leader Logan didn’t quite cruise, as he ran into a very tough final round match-up with Jake D.  Despite Logan taking a very quick lead, Jake battled back forcing Logan into a match that was decided by Logan drawing a “Professor Juniper” after an “N” left him with a 1 card hand.  Logan took the game and 1st place finish in the Senior Division.  Gym Leader Joel was unable to help the Gym complete the “hat-trick” as he missed the final KO by 10 HP (thanks to an opponent’s “Eviolite”), decking out on the next turn.  Joel still took home the 3rd Place finish.

Saturday’s event was a nice warm up for the Challenge at the Gym on Sunday.  The Fincastle Challenge became even more interesting when we learn that good ol’ “TOM” (tournament software) paired everyone together, so that each round a Junior faced a Senior and a Senior faced a Master.  We’ve done this long enough that we’ve stopped trying to figure out the “why” on what TOM does sometimes… we do know that what it does is what we have to go with, so away we went.  The chance of the “sweep” on Sunday was eliminated before a single card was drawn, as Round 1 pitted Gym Leaders Logan and Joel against each other (thanks TOM).  Logan set up quickly and took the game in 3 turns before Joel could ever get out of a bad opening hand.  Sunday was Logan’s day to cruise as he continued to play well and finished the day undefeated and in 1st place in the Senior Division.  Logan was followed by Hunter H (2nd place) who battled Master competitor Harold O to a tie in a very tight match that looked like it would have gone to Hunter had there been a few more minutes of play.  Owen K edged out Brycen F in the tie-break column to take 3rd place in the tournament.

If Sunday was Logan’s day to cruise, it was Georgia’s day to struggle (we hope future tournaments do not follow that trend).  Georgia opened with one of those nightmare-ish games in which she found all but 1 of her main attackers prized.  That might not have been a huge problem had she not been against Sarah N, a new player to the Gym that played an excellent 1st tournament.  Georgia had to definitely think outside the box, which she did well.  With 1 card left in her deck and 1 prize to take, Georgia played a “N” to put her hand back into her deck, buying her enough time to take the last prize card.  From there, things went a little smoother as she finished the day undefeated and in 1st place.  Siblings Davis N and Sarah N took 2nd and 3rd place with identical 2-1 records, separated by 5 percentage points in the tie-break column.

As mentioned, Harold O, who like Gym Leader Joel had the unfortunate luck of drawing 1 of the Gym’s top Seniors, stayed on top of the Master Division by virtue of the tie w/Hunter.  Harold was followed by Jason B in 2nd place, who made an impressive comeback with a 4-prize card, double KO against Gym Leader Joel in Round 2.  Joel found the 3rd place spot again for the 2nd straight day to close out the Master division.

Thanks to Spandex City Comics for hosting the event in Charlotte and to Gym Leader Marthe for running a smooth event here at the Gym.  Congratulations to all of the winners!  We are back at the Gym next Sunday at our regular time.  Until then, see you at the Gym!
