Congratulations to Trainers x3!

goat3With the addition of the VG Gym Leaders, the challenge table at the Fincastle Pokemon Gym can get quite busy.  And so it was this past Sunday at the Gym.  The Gym Leaders took on a total a 5 challenges on the day (2 TCG, 3 VG).  We battled a mix of trainers that ranged from new to both the VG and TCG, to those who are more experienced and on to those who might teach us a thing or 2 in the process.  In the end, we were only able to hold off 2 of the 5 trainers in the hunt. It started to look like the fainting goat association with all of the KO’s and fainted pokemon.   Here’s what went down.

Gym Leader Logan fielded a VG challenge from Annie against his Darkness-type team.  This was her 1st challenge against any of the VG leaders.  Logan was able to sweep the two battles with relative ease.  Likewise, Gym Leader Joel fielded a TCG challenge against the Grass-type gym deck from another newcomer, Owen F.  Joel defended the badge in straight games, as well, but not without giving up a few prize cards during the match.  Both Annie and Owen are on the right track and hopefully with a few tips from the leaders, will take some steps to improve their decks/teams and return to challenge us again soon.

Gym Leader Noah was up against it again this week, as he was again in the sites of Eric A, who was after his Dragon-type team this time.   While Noah, like the goatrest of the video game leaders, is still working out details and combos for their respective teams, Eric came armed with a team of Dragon killers (or “knock-outers”, since Pokemon only faint, mind you, not die….).  But yeah, he had a team of killers.  Eric took the match in straight games again, earning his 2nd badge at the Gym.  Great job, Eric!

As that match was wrapping up, Gym Leader Joel was challenged again for the Grass-type badge, this time by Robbie F, who has already won the Lightning netbadge.  The Virizion/Genesect leader deck has been virtually unchanged since its inception, as it has performed well against everything, including Pyroar, thanks to the ACESPEC G-Booster item card.  However, Robbie seems to be a loyal devotee of the various internet decks sites and picked up on a fairly easy way to cripple the deck which we had never considered, especially since our Grass-deck never leaves its box outside of league play.  That method is the use of the “Team Flare Tool” item cards.  We included no means to remove the tools, meaning both matches went the same.  In both games, Robbie evolved Pyroar‘s and immediately attached the “Flare” tools to every Genesect that hit the field.  Oddly goat2enough, Robbie still played down other pokemon (in addition to Pyroar), allowing the Gym Leader to take prizes from what should have been a completely locked-down field.  These mistakes are commonly made by those playing other people’s list, as they see the core idea but don’t fully grasp the reason every card is in a deck.  Nonetheless, Genesect w/out access to “G-Booster” still went down in straight games.  The Grass badge is Robbie’s 2nd badge earned at the Gym.  Great job, Robbie!

Hunter H wrapped up the day by splitting games and then taking the 3rd game and the match against the Lightning VG leader, Marthe.  Good job, Hunter.

It was a very busy day at the Gym.  We enjoy all of the challenges, so keep them coming.  Remember that if you want some assistance improving your deck or building a stronger VG team, seek out any of the leaders present and we will be glad to help you.  If you know you want some help, get our attention when you arrive so that we can assist you before we get into something else.  Until then, see you at the Gym!
