Congratulations Eric, Robbie and Davis

The Fincastle Gym had yet another busy Sunday of challenges this past weekend.  Despite Sunday being a holiday, we had a good turnout at league.  Gym Leader Marthe’s TCG creations were the focus of the trainers on deck.  On the VG front, Eric A continued his assault on the Gym Leader teams.  Before we get into the details, we want to remind everyone about the league challenge this Sunday, 5/31 at the Gym.  We will post details on that directly after this post.

safeRobbie F came back for a rematch against Gym Leader Marthe’s Psychic-type deck.  In their previous match, they split games and Robbie eventually lost a very close 3rd game.  Sunday’s match would surely follow suit.  However, Gym Leader Marthe took game 1, putting Robbie in a hole, having to win 2 in a row to take the challenge.  Robbie adjusted his strategy in the 2nd game, targeting Marthe’s “Safeguard” pokemon until they were gone, freeing him up to take the game.  He stuck to this strategy through the 3rd game and it paid off.  Robbie game from behind and took the match.  The win gave Robbie the Psychic badge, his 3rd at the Gym.  Great job, Robbie!

Next up was Eric A, who has been cruising through the Gym Leader VG teams.  Perhaps if we had started VG gym teams when we started the Gym itself, our teams would be refined enough to turn away a player on Eric’s level.  However, it seems so far like we are playing “catch-up” to him.  Our hopes of slowing him drilldown on his way to all 9 badges seem to be waning.  Of our combined teams, we felt that Gym Leader Logan’s Steel-type team would be one of the tougher for Eric to deal with.  In the 1st game, Eric effectively used “Thunder Wave” from his Thundurus to gain control of the speed advantage.  From there, he swept the battle with “Earthquake” from a hard-hitting Excadrill.  Game 2 saw Eric open with a pair of “Earthquakers”, Landorus-T and Mega-Gyarados.  He again out-sped Logan’s team, keeping him on the defensive through the game.  Eric took the match in straight games, earning the Steel-type badge, his 5th at the Gym.  Great job, Eric!

Gym Leader closed the day by taking on a challenge against her Lightning-type deck from Davis N.  Landorus EX, with all of the Fighting-type support from the Furious Fists set (“Strong Energy”, “Fighting Stadium”) and the Crobat support from all of the internet decklists floating around is too overpowered for any Lightning deck.  Davis won the match in 2 games, giving him his 1st badge at the Gym.  With the defeat, we now have the chance to try to think out of the box a little more and see what we can come with.  Gym Leaders Joel and Marthe are already testing a couple of new ideas and look forward to trying them out.

Check back shortly for details about our league challenge coming up this Sunday.  Until then, see you at the Gym!
