Congratulations Chris, v3.0!

far3Let’s see if we can frame this one in terms of the timeline of the Fincastle Pokemon Gym.  Gym Leader Logan had not yet qualified for his 1st World Championships.  Gym Leader Georgia, well, was not a Gym Leader.  She played of few games here and there, but had not become powerful female World Championship level player that little boys all over the country dreaded facing (because they knew they were getting ready to have the butts handed to them… BY A GIRL!!!).  Gym Leader Marthe was not an organizer.  In fact, she had just become a judge and had only helped out in a few small events.  Speaking of events, the 1st Battle Roads to be held in our area had not come yet and we were still campaigning to get our 1st Roanoke area pre-release.  Our Gym Leader Challenge was a brand new concept and our days at league usually consisted of multiple leaders fielding challenges all day at league, sometimes to the tune of 5 or 6 challenges in a single league meeting.  That is what was going on in Fincastle the last time that Chris L won a gym badge.

Chris won his 1st gym challenge over Marthe’s Lighting-type deck in November of 2010.  That win was the 4th badge ever earned at the Gym and Chris was the 3rd trainer to win a badge (Tyler D won 2 badges prior).  Chris won his 2nd badge in May of 2011 in another interesting side-note of Gym history.  His 2nd win was over the Fire-type gym leader, Austin.  Austin (now retired) was the 1st league trainer to become a Fincastle gym leader.  Gym Leader Logan took over the role briefly and Gym Leader Joel has held it since.

far1This past Sunday, over 7 years since his last attempt, Chris challenged Gym Leader Joel’s Grass-type deck.  Chris has been able to collect a few Fire-type EX’s (the EX archetype did not exist in 2010-11), partner them with Entei (“Combat Blaze”) and make a pretty strong “comeback” deck.  By “comeback” we mean to acknowledge his return to the game.  However, it also describes the path he took to win his 3rd badge.

Joel’s Mega Sceptile EX/Trevenant EX deck has been one of the only Grass-type decks available in the recent format for Joel to use as a Gym Leader deck.  While it lacks hitting power, its can be a bear to play if you cannot 1-hit Mega-Sceptile, as Joel commonly switches between 2 Mega Sceptile, attacking for 100 damage every turn and healing off any damage on the field with the effect of “Jagged Saber”.  Against a Fire-type pokemon that can for 110 damage or more, Sceptile is in for a tough match.  Enter Chris’s Flareon EX.

far2Joel jumped out to a quick lead and a relatively easy win in Game 1.  Game 2 looked to be going that way as well, as Joel took a quick KO on an EX to open the contest.  However, he made the mistake of benching 1 too many pokemon, allowing Entei to hit for just enough damage for a return 1 hit KO.  Chris evened the game with Entei while he readied Flareon EX.  At 2 prizes each, he turned to Flareon EX for the win and to force a game 3.  Game 3 finally started the way Chris wanted, as he was able to open with Flareon EX and power it up quickly.  He was able to carry game 3 with relative ease.  By claiming the Grass-type badge, Chris wins his 3rd badge, which is the 61st badge claimed at the Gym.  Great job, Chris!

We’re back at our normal time again this Sunday, so come by and join us.  If you haven’t challenged a leader yet, ask a gym leader about it.  We are still working on Sun & Moon VG gym teams, so it will likely be a few more weeks before we are able to resume VG challenges.  If you would like to challenge a VG leader, let us know (we can still conduct a challenge on ORAS if you really want to do one).  See you at the Gym!
