January TCG Challenge Results and Congrats Chris, v5.0!

The Fincastle Gym had a busy day this past Sunday and, thanks to the school system shutting down for the week over weather that makes Gym Leader Marthe (a Wisconsin native) chuckle, our kids have been home all week, making it difficult to find time to finish this post.  We have two interesting pieces of news to share, both about Sunday’s happening.  The first is about a New Year’s resolution of sorts.  For the majority of 2017, we adopted the schedule of hosting one TCG League Challenge and one VG Challenge each month.  Gym Leader Joel thought it’d be a nice addition to post the results of those events to recognize the winners.  So starting this week, we will do so.  We won’t list descriptions of the matches, mostly because we can’t watch them all.  However, for now, we will list the results.  Our dream is to video tape both TCG & VG finals and Gym Leader Challenges and connect a YouTube channel to this site (which is not an issue of “how”, but an issue of finding the time to do so).  For now, we’ll stick with listing the winners.  Speaking of Gym Leader Challenges….

First things first… here are the winners from Sunday’s League Challenge:

Masters:

1st Place – Joel H
2nd Place – Chris L
3rd Place – Iain M

Seniors:

1st Place – Georgia H
2nd Place – Daniel S
3rd Place – Emma L

Juniors:

1st Place – Eddie R

Congratulations and thanks to all who joined us for the event.

Now onto the second bit of news from Sunday.  To quote one of our faves, Sheriff Buford T Justice…, OK, bad idea.  In the spirit of keeping things PG-rated, to reference a scene from Smokey and the Bandit… Chris L must be part coon dog.  He is relentless in his pursuit of gym badges at our league.  He has participated in Gym Leader Challenges that have gone both ways.  There have been some where Chris was soundly defeated in consecutive games.  There have also been some matches where he has split the best 2-of-3 challenges, losing the deciding game by a turn or a single prize card.  Regardless of the results, he always displays excellent sportsmanship.  If he loses, he usually adjusts his deck by a card or two and comes right back for another challenge.

With a recently built Psychic-type deck, Chris has tested the waters against both the Fighting-type deck and the Psychic-type deck.  While finding the Fighting-type deck a little uninviting, he has had some close calls with Gym Leader Marthe and her Psychic-type deck.  In fact, Chris has challenged it unsuccessfully six times.  Things finally came around for him on attempt number seven.

Chris defeated Gym Leader Marthe in the 1st game of their challenge, as she struggled to really get anything going, which was a pleasant change for Chris.  Gym Leader Marthe responded by taking a lead in game 2 using Espeon GX‘s move “Divide GX” to knock out his active Zorua.  After trading prizes with  mutual Psychic-type weaknesses, both players turned to Tapu Lele GX.  However, after taking 150 damage from “Energy Drive,” Chris negated the attack by turning to the rarely used “Tapu Cure GX” attack from his Tapu Lele GX, completely healing two GX’s.  From there, he evened the game and then took the last KO with the same Tapu Lele GX.  The straight-game victory was well earned and netted Chris his 5th badge at the Gym, tying him for 3rd place on the Wall of Fame by number of badges earned.  Great job, Chris!

We are getting closer and closer to challenge #400, so if you have a deck, we suggest that you challenge a Gym Leader, whether you think you can beat them or not.  The worst that could happen is that you could have a match with a Gym Leader and get a look at a competitive single type deck.  However, you could win a brand new, custom deck built by Gym Leader Joel.  If you want to challenge a leader, find any leader as soon as you get to league and let them know your intentions so that we can allow time for the match.

Join us this weekend for our first weekend of Ultra Prism pre-releases and our January VG challenge (check events page for details).  See you at the Gym!
