The Pokemon Company and Play!Pokemon announced its 2018 TCG rotation… back in May. Why? “Why” is an often asked and rarely answered question for a lot actions taken by the corporation. Our speculation as to this “why” is similar to the scenario of the “Top Cut” website (remember the original online site with “Pooka”, where all net-deckers went to get their lists). The Top Cut was taking too much internet traffic away from Pokemon.com. So, Pokemon hired Pooka (the site’s creator) to write and commentate for them, thus improving their service and eliminating a competitor. Of course, dozens of other sites popped up in his absence and the entire community had to embrace net-decking just to keep up, thus turning to many other internet sources. Mission not accomplished. Our annual rotation article is our site’s biggest draw, and the subject in general draws lots of traffic to various YouTube channels and other sites. So, Pokemon’s response is… just throw it out there in May. Solid plan. The discussion of “why’s” is not why we’re here today, so let’s move on to the reason we are here, the rotation. The Fincastle Pokemon Gym’s card store and retail business, Dark Moon Cards and Games, just launched a new and updated website. We are going to be taking our show on the road a little more often over the next few months and of course will be hosted our 3rd Roanoke Regional Championship this November. Updates on where we’ll be and what is new at Dark Moon and The Fincastle Gym can be found there. From that site you can link directly to our store, our Facebook page, this site and our Regionals site. All of our events are listed there, as well as here. Speaking of events… Continue reading
The Fincastle Gym is hosting two days of pre-releases this weekend. Forbidden Light is the 6th set in the Sun & Moon series, which will be officially released on May 4, 2018. Forbidden Light contain over 130 cards, including 8 new GX’s, 5 new “Prism Star” cards and some interesting new support cards. While the original Japanese set Forbidden Light contains 110 cards, this expansion combines cards released of the Japanese set and a subset dubbed, Ultra Force. Continue reading
Well, for anyone out there that is new to this part of the country, welcome to the most schizophrenic weather in the world! We cancelled league this past Sunday because of the winter weather warnings. Gym Leader Joel, who was flying solo this weekend, drove home from work early Sunday morning in 30 degree weather with a steady mix of rain and ice. When he awoke around 2pm, it looked like picnic weather outside. 65 degrees one day, 2 feet of snow the next… that’s winter in southwest Virginia. At any rate, the insanely busy month of March is thankfully almost over. Starting this coming Sunday, 4/1/18, all of the gym leaders will be back and we’ll have league at our normal time. We know its Easter Sunday and that many of you may be busy with family, however, we look forward to seeing any and every one who can join us. Continue reading
The Fincastle Gym was trying to work out opening up league this Sunday, 3/25/18, but it looks like the weather may be a factor this weekend. Rather than planning on having it and then having to cancel it last minute, we are going to concede and simply plan on not having it. We will definitely be back at the Gym the following Sunday, 4/1/18. All of the leaders will be there that weekend and it looks like the wave of nor’easters will hopefully have run their course by then. So join us next weekend on Easter Sunday afternoon if you can! Check back soon for details about events in April and beyond. See you soon at the Gym!
The month of March is just about kaput for the Gym, at least as far as league events go. The Fincastle Pokemon Gym will not hold league for the next two weeks, for sure, and perhaps three, depending on what happens with our robotics team. So, for now, there is NO LEAGUE on Sunday, 3/11/18, or the following week on Sunday, 3/18/18. We are not sure how things will play out over the last weekend in March, so we will leave that date open for now. We will make an Continue reading
The Fincastle Gym Leaders (and Dark Moon Cards and Games) are on the lookout for some cards… and maybe you have them in your collection! While this isn’t exactly “Cash for Clunkers” – we would like to open up an exchange program where you can redeem some of your cards for brand new packs of Ultra Prism! Continue reading
The Fincastle Pokemon Gym is excited to announce that we are extending “Bring-A-Friend” month to include the month of February. We missed league last weekend as Dark Moon Cards and Games, the Gym’s card store, was vending at the Star City Anime Convention. As it so happened, we would have likely missed league anyway because of the random weather on Sunday. We had a great time at the convention and we will be vending again this Saturday, 2/10/2018, at the Big Lick Comic Con at the Berglund Center in Roanoke. Following this convention, we will return to Fincastle for league and a League Challenge at our regular time on Sunday. As a reminder, here’s how “Bring-A-Friend” month works. Any existing trainer can bring a new player with them and introduce them to the game and league play. If they do, that new player will receive a free starter deck, compliments of the Gym. The trainer that brings a friend will receive a booster pack as thanks for helping our league grow. If you have never been to the Gym and wish to visit us on your own, come join us. If you bring yourself, you may choose either the deck or a pack. If you have never visited us and would like to AND you bring someone with you, you and your friend may work it out as to whom is bringing whom, and divvy up the deck and pack. Come see us at Big Lick on Saturday (we are against the wall near the stage) and bring your friends to play at the Gym this Sunday.
The Fincastle Pokemon Gym is kicking off 2018 by bringing back one of our old favorites. The month of January at the Gym is what we once called “Force Your Parents To Play” month. Our original idea was meant to get the parents of gym trainers to give the Pokemon TCG a try for two major reasons. The first reason is pretty simple. We believe that getting involved in anything that your kids do and spending time with them is always a good thing. Many parents are quick to write this game off as something they’ll never understand. However, usually after a game or two, they get the hang of it. The second reason is for those who want to go beyond casual play and try their hand at the competitive tournament scene. One thing that we’ve seen hold true over the years is that the majority of, if not all of the competitive Junior and Senior players have parents that are heavily involved in the game. Either way, if you can talk you parents into joining you, you will both get some goodies from the Gym. Continue reading
As many of you know from reading past articles on this page, we like to tie the themes and ideas that we write into pop culture, mostly in the form of movies, both popular and obscure. The reason behind this is that the author (Gym Leader Joel) loves all genres of film. To call him a film buff would be like calling Count Von Count a numbers guy. No, Joel is a film fanatic. Joel will deify a movie over shooting a short sequence better than others that have attempted the same, or over detailed camera work, even if the film itself is lackluster. Needless to say, when film makers put it all together and make a masterpiece, Joel is blown away. So it is with this is mind that he is sharing a Christmas message from the Gym that is directly from a movie that remains his favorite above all others. Continue reading
