Thanksgiving Gym Leader Challenge Update

As we have described many times before, the Gym Leader Challenge is a facet of the Fincastle Pokemon Gym that is exclusive to our league.  We have single-type decks of each type in the TCG available to test your best decks against.  The concept was born to follow the adventure that video game players experience while playing through the story mode of each edition of Pokemon video games.   Gym Leader Joel has been brainstorming a bit about how to up the reward for whomever completes Gym Leader Challenge #400 at the Fincastle Pokemon Gym.  We hit a new high at #300, where we supplied a fully built, competitive deck to the winner (Plasma Lugia EX).  Knowing that we don’t have unlimited funds, we believe he has found a cool way to achieve that. 2017 Halloween Costume Contest Results

It was not officially Halloween yet, but it surely felt like it at the Gym on Sunday.  Our combination pre-release/costume contest always stirs our Halloween spirit as we have had some awesome gatherings over the last few years.  This year did not disappoint.  As a matter of fact, we’d say that everyone “upped” their game, to the point we had to turn to some of our seasoned league trainers to help break the judging deadlock and decide the winners.  Those who have walked away with the top spots in previous years had some real competition this time around. October Pre-Releases & Costume Contests Coming Up!

It’s October, which at the Fincastle Pokemon Gym means  Fall pre-release time.  The upcoming set, Crimson Invasion, looks like it will add some cool new cards, including the Ultra Beasts from Sun & Moon, but that’s not what we’re most excited about.  To us, October means it’s time for Halloween and more importantly, our league’s costume contests.  Our small but hardy group has turned in amazing costume ideas over the years.  We can’t say for sure whether our favorite part is seeing everyone else’s entries or making our own, but either way, we can’t wait for them to get here. Merry Christmas From The Gym!

hohoThe Fincastle Gym is counting down the days on another great year.  This our 7th year has been an interesting one for sure.  We watched as Gym Leader Georgia turned in a dominating final year in the Junior Division, placing in several Regionals, winning a State Championship, claiming the highest finish ever by a Gym member at the National Championships and becoming our 1st player to earn World Championship invitations in both the TCG and VG.  Her dominating Continue reading

Update On League Seasons And Rewards

Sometimes Pokemon news comes in ways you just can’t miss.  We’ve seen announcement take the form a TV adds, internet promotions, information packets to organizers or even well thought out and descriptive articles on Pokemon.com.  Sometimes they are a little more subtle.  Take the new season of league materials and format for league play, for example.  Several weeks ago we received some league posters that looked like smaller versions of the aposter“leaderboard” posters we used last season.  And… that was it, no instructions, no promo pins, badges, cards, etc.  So, we’ve made no announcements at league because we did not have anything to tell you other than, “We got posters”.  League leaders were finally given a breakdown of what to do with said posters, although we have yet to receive the accompanying materials (which we have learned will be Item cards specific to each season).  So, this is what we know. VG Premier Challenge This Sunday, 11/27/16!

Okay, so last Sunday did not go as planned.  We hope that everyone received the notice of league cancellation in time.  That’s the biggest drawback of our league location is that we are required to pick up a key every Saturday and return it on Sunday after league.  In instances like last weekend, we got caught up and could keynot get to the library in time to get the key… and no key means no league.  We apologize to any who did not see Facebook or league emails in time.  On the positive side, all of the Gym Leaders were able to visit the Lexington league on Monday and spend time playing with its trainers.  We are pleased to see the large group of very promising Juniors in attendance in Lexington, and we hope extend the “Generals” program to the fledgling league soon.  At any rate, we are back on track for this Sunday and will have league and a VG Premier Challenge at our regular league time. Halloween Pre-Release Photos

halloween-038Wow.  What a fun couple of weeks at the Gym!  We always enjoy the weeks that surround new set releases and the accompanying pre-release tournaments, as they are nice breaks from the competitive season.  However, no other events, for us anyway, ever seem to hold a candle to the October pre-releases and our costume contests.  Yes, it gets pretty noisy… and yes, the Fincastle Library room was hotter than a billy goat butt in a pepper patch, especially for those in costumes, but it is worth it for us to get to see the creative side of many of our trainers.  Looking at some of the amazing efforts put forth by our trainers, we wonder if we should “re-class” our contest from that of a costume event to a cosplay event.  We think some of our guys and gals could compete with the best at area anime conventions and comi-cons (at little more about that later). A Plethora Of October Events Remain At The Gym!

guapo1Would we say we have a plethora of events?  Oh yes, we have a plethora of events still remaining in October at the Gym.  And don’t worry, we would not tell someone that we have a plethora, if we did not have any idea what a plethora is.  We definitely know what it means to have a plethora.  Sorry to say, there will not be any pinatas involved, but we hope each event will be filled with little surprises.  We are sorry that we have not made the time to post here in the last week or so, but October has already been a very busy month for the Gym.  Gym Leaders Georgia and Logan got their feet wet in their 1st major event of the year, the Orlando Regional.  Gym Leader Marthe is knee-deep in the planning stages of the Blue Ridge Regional coming to Roanoke next May.  All of the leaders have been busy welcoming and teaching new players at both our Fincastle and Lexington leagues.  At times it feels like events are falling from the sky like gringos.  We try to handle them with a little more grace than El Guapo. Join The Gym at Geek Mob This Sunday!

mobFirst things first… the will be no league this Sunday (8/14) in Fincastle.  However, there is something really cool taking place on the same day in Salem and the Fincastle Pokemon Gym will be right in the middle of it.  “Geek Mob” (http://geekmobroanoke.com), an event that began as a comic book swap in 2011, has grown into a mini-convention of sorts.  Sporting everything from vendors to live entertainment to Cosplay, the one day event has something for everyone.  The “Mob” will be held at the Salem Civic Center on Sunday, 8/14/16, from 1pm to 9pm.  Full detail are available on the link above.  The Fincastle Gym’s Dark Moon Cards and Games will be there all day.  Here’s a look at what we will have available. Testing, Testing, 1, 2, … 1, 2!

tiredAs the Fincastle Gym helps its 2 qualifiers prepare for the 2016 World Championships, one thing above all else has become crystal clear… testing for 2 players is exhausting!  This year’s Championships mark the 4th time since the Gym’s inception in 2011 that we’ve sent competitors to the pinnacle of TCG events.  However, this is the 1st time that we have had to help 2 players prepare at the same time.  Gym Leader Logan lead the way for the Gym in 2011 and 2012, while Gym Leader Georgia carried the torch in 2014.  Helping them prepare for those tournaments consumed virtually every spare minute we had in the time between Nationals and Worlds.  Having both players earn invitations in the same year has redefined how we help them prepare.
