The Fincastle Gym is hosting two days of pre-releases this weekend. Forbidden Light is the 6th set in the Sun & Moon series, which will be officially released on May 4, 2018. Forbidden Light contain over 130 cards, including 8 new GX’s, 5 new “Prism Star” cards and some interesting new support cards. While the original Japanese set Forbidden Light contains 110 cards, this expansion combines cards released of the Japanese set and a subset dubbed, Ultra Force. Continue reading
We think Mike Tyson said something like, “Everyone has a plan til they get punched in the mouth.” We had a plan, we changed the plan, something completely different happened… that’s the way of the world, it seems. The end result was a fun day at the Gym, but wasn’t exactly what we had anticipated. We had hoped to have results of both a League Challenge and VG Premier Challenge to report, however we did not have enough players for the VG Premier Challenge. While Anna R was ready to show VG players how its done, unfortunately, we could not hold the video game event without the minimum of 8 players. As we mentioned before, the month of March this year is a lost cause for us, as we just have too many things scheduled. The month of April will return us to our normal schedule at league, thankfully. The Fincastle Gym Leaders (and Dark Moon Cards and Games) are on the lookout for some cards… and maybe you have them in your collection! While this isn’t exactly “Cash for Clunkers” – we would like to open up an exchange program where you can redeem some of your cards for brand new packs of Ultra Prism! Continue reading
“Tis a lesson you should heed, Try, try again. If at first you don’t succeed, Try, try again.” These are words that we’ve heard so often in our lives that they’ve surely lost their significance and power. In fact, the sarcastic nature of our world probably has us more familiar with such quips as, “If at first you don’t succeed, perhaps skydiving isn’t for you…”, or “…, try doing what your teacher told you the first time…” or even, “… get a bigger hammer.” What’s lost in all of that wit and cleverness is that the original phrase, penned in the 1800’s by an author and educator named Thomas H Palmer, is perhaps one of the most concise descriptions of The American Dream. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. As you pursue your goals, you are bound to make mistakes and experience setbacks, often having to accept that you have to improve. You have to learn from your mistakes and keep trying until you either get it right or tire from trying and settle for something less. We at The Gym believe that basic principle, so eloquently wrapped up in a single quote, applies equally to any single desire. Whether it is something big like trying to save for a first car, or buying a home, or something small, like a child saving money for a toy, or a gift for a parent, the feeling of accomplishment is the same. The badge won this past Sunday may have been the hardest earned badge to date at the Gym. Continue reading
The Fincastle Pokemon Gym is thrilled to announce that the Regional Championships are returning to Roanoke in 2018! The Regional will return to the Berglund Center on Memorial Day weekend, the 25th through the 27th of May, 2018. Pokemon confirmed this with us prior to their announcement this past Wednesday and informed us that our TCG event will be in the Expanded Format. We are planning on returning many of the features from this year’s event, like the vendor marketplace and a variety of side events including Battle Fiesta style tournaments. We have other ideas in mind to expand the weekend experience, including several Friday evening events, which we will share soon on the Regional website as we solidify those details. Roanoke was one of the biggest and most diverse Regionals of the 2016-17 season. It is our goal to outdo ourselves for next May’s event. Check back here and on the Regionals site for details as they come! See you at the Gym!
Today we are going to look at our last deck in our Bargain Bin series. One reason it fell to our final spot was due to some price checking. We were afraid that because it features a “promo” card, that it might slip out-of-bounds in terms of pricing. The other reason we waited was because it was a concept deck up until about 2 weeks ago. By that, we mean that it only existed to us in theory, and there were no online version to peek at. Our 1st attempt at the deck was not worthy to post, as it was very inconsistent. Gym Leaders Logan and Joel took turns tweaking the list, trying to get this potentially deadly combo to work (without Shaymin EX, which is a stumbling block that every player is going to have to face in about 5 months). What we have here is the best that we could do and frankly, it’s pretty interesting. Two nights ago in the PTCGO, I watched Logan fall behind to a Darkrai/Giratina list only to flip the game on his opponent, taking his last 4 prizes in one attack, as the opposing player was locked, watching this one wreck the powerful meta deck. This week we are returning to our Mega-love feature, which we have to admit was not intentional, but does fall nicely into place in terms of timing as Valentine’s Day approaches. If you are like us, you are surely being bombarded by advertisements with all sorts of “loving” ideas that you can order with a convenient app and have delivered to your beloved, without taking away valuable moments of your iPhone duties. In the last few days, we’ve seen everything from comfy jammies to giant bears, gourmet dipped strawberries to Zyppahs (because nothing says “I love you” like a device that says, “Shut up & quit snoring!”), to roses made out of beef jerky. Mmmmm, beef jerky roses….. Sorry, lost our train of thought for a minute. Traditionally, Gym Leader Joel has been a lover of the stuffed animal. Stuffed animals don’t wilt, can’t make you gain weight, always fit and generally do not offend (although in this day & age, I’m sure some little snowflake somewhere has taken issue w/a little puppy holding a heart that says, “I Wuv You”). We hope that when you look at the featured pokemon today, like any good stuffed animal, you will exclaim, “It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die!” Continue reading
Would we say we have a plethora of events? Oh yes, we have a plethora of events still remaining in October at the Gym. And don’t worry, we would not tell someone that we have a plethora, if we did not have any idea what a plethora is. We definitely know what it means to have a plethora. Sorry to say, there will not be any pinatas involved, but we hope each event will be filled with little surprises. We are sorry that we have not made the time to post here in the last week or so, but October has already been a very busy month for the Gym. Gym Leaders Georgia and Logan got their feet wet in their 1st major event of the year, the Orlando Regional. Gym Leader Marthe is knee-deep in the planning stages of the Blue Ridge Regional coming to Roanoke next May. All of the leaders have been busy welcoming and teaching new players at both our Fincastle and Lexington leagues. At times it feels like events are falling from the sky like gringos. We try to handle them with a little more grace than El Guapo. Continue reading
This weekend, the Fincastle Pokemon Gym Leaders will be knee-deep in everything Pokemon. The 2016 TCG and VG Championships take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. This venue is a new one for the Gym, as Indianapolis has hosted the event every year since we became involved with the game. We are checked in and registered, as are several of our best trainers who made the trip as well. Play begins tomorrow, so we will have more info at that time as to attendance for the tournament and how everyone fared on day 1 (time permitting). For those who could not join us: There is no league this Sunday, 7/3/16. The leaders will not be available on the following Sunday either, but we may have league under the direction of one of our regular families (check back next week to verify whether we have league or not). Check back this weekend for details about Nats and wish us all luck! See you soon at the Gym!
Do you remember those little ol’ things called Gym Leader Challenges? Yeah, we still have them. Not at the level that we used to, though. At one time, the Gym Leaders were trying to see how many challenges they could fit into one league session. Over the last few months, if we field 1 per meeting, that has been a busy day for the Gym Leaders. So what’s different? Not that much at the Gym. However, over the last year, as Play!Pokemon has expanded the number of events available across the country, the down-time between events has shrunk drastically. It seems that League Challenges, City Championships and the big events (States/Regionals) take place just weeks apart. That, coupled with the advent of the new league format, has really put the brakes on Gym Leader Challenges. Needless to say, the Gym Leaders experienced a mild sensory overload as they fielded two VG Challenges at once today after the League Challenge. Continue reading
