Gym Deck Retired: Golisopod GX/Lurantis GX

As we detailed in a few of our latest posts, Gym Leader Joel has been taking a beating in recent Gym Leader challenges.  Despite two recent losses, his Steel-type deck still stands as a tough deck to beat.  On the other hand, Joel’s Grass-type deck has been burned down by several gym trainers recently, losing six times in the last eight challenges.  All six losses were not by the same deck.  The earlier version was a straight Lurantis GX/Tapu Bulu GX deck, which in its own right is a solid deck and did not really need to be retired, as it had a strong record in challenges.  Joel changed from that one simply because he wanted to try something else.  The current version is an all Grass-type Golisopod GX deck.  The strength of Fire-type decks at the moment makes any Grass-type deck vulnerable to defeat.  Building an unbeatable deck is not our goal.  We want our gym decks to help players learn how to focus a deck build towards a specific goal, like focusing on a central attacker or line of attackers, and supporting it with the correct line of Items, Supporters and Stadiums.  Recent challengers have definitely been on point as far as that goal goes.  Like we promised earlier, when a few trainers take down the same deck, we will retire it (if possible) and share it here with you. The Bargain Bin #1 – Lance Armstrong

bud1The Fincastle Gym is going to continue its look at some of our online decks for the next week or two.  However, we are going to shift our focus from our “Mega Love” theme to some budget friendly decks.  The recent Sun & Moon set offered up some nice additions into this category.  Several of these deck combos are pretty obvious ideas for decks, so it is likely that you have seen a version (or versions) of these decks already.  By “budget friendly”, we mean to show you some builds that you can put together for little to no cost, as you may already have these cards set aside in a binder, tin or box of cards that you think you will never use.  This obviously means no Shaymin EX ($45-$65 at the moment) or any other card that carries with it a cost in the $20 or more range.  Does that mean these decks are not competitive?  Absolutely not.  Some of the most competitive decks over the last several seasons have been some of the most inexpensive.  Remember “Night March”?  How about Vespiquen Continue reading

Update On League Seasons And Rewards

Sometimes Pokemon news comes in ways you just can’t miss.  We’ve seen announcement take the form a TV adds, internet promotions, information packets to organizers or even well thought out and descriptive articles on Pokemon.com.  Sometimes they are a little more subtle.  Take the new season of league materials and format for league play, for example.  Several weeks ago we received some league posters that looked like smaller versions of the aposter“leaderboard” posters we used last season.  And… that was it, no instructions, no promo pins, badges, cards, etc.  So, we’ve made no announcements at league because we did not have anything to tell you other than, “We got posters”.  League leaders were finally given a breakdown of what to do with said posters, although we have yet to receive the accompanying materials (which we have learned will be Item cards specific to each season).  So, this is what we know. A Plethora Of October Events Remain At The Gym!

guapo1Would we say we have a plethora of events?  Oh yes, we have a plethora of events still remaining in October at the Gym.  And don’t worry, we would not tell someone that we have a plethora, if we did not have any idea what a plethora is.  We definitely know what it means to have a plethora.  Sorry to say, there will not be any pinatas involved, but we hope each event will be filled with little surprises.  We are sorry that we have not made the time to post here in the last week or so, but October has already been a very busy month for the Gym.  Gym Leaders Georgia and Logan got their feet wet in their 1st major event of the year, the Orlando Regional.  Gym Leader Marthe is knee-deep in the planning stages of the Blue Ridge Regional coming to Roanoke next May.  All of the leaders have been busy welcoming and teaching new players at both our Fincastle and Lexington leagues.  At times it feels like events are falling from the sky like gringos.  We try to handle them with a little more grace than El Guapo. Pokemon Announces 2013 Rotation – Next Destinies-On!

The Pokemon Trading Card Season traditionally runs from World Championships to World Championships.  They have altered that slightly, beginning the new season both this and last year in July so that you can start building PLAY! Points earlier through league play.  This was done because of the new PLAY! Point requirement for entry into the National Championships, a response to the “free t-shirt mob” that threw the 2011 Nationals into chaos (a large group entered for the free shirt and then dropped/didn’t show for round 1).  At any rate, the close of each season also usually brings with it a rotation of card sets (usually around 3 sets) to make room for new sets coming in the next year and attempt to shake up the format a little by removing cards that have become staples in many decks.  For the 2013-14 season, the Modified Format will be Next Destinies-on (NXD-on).  This rotation will officially take place on 8/28/13. Promos and Prizes Available at the Gym

Since the Fincastle Pokemon Gym’s beginning, we have accumulated quite a long list of promo cards from Play!Pokemon.  Each new season brings 2 new promo cards, usually a combination of a Pokemon and either a trainer card or energy card.  So far, it has been a pretty good mix of cards that are very useful to those that play competitively and cards that are just cool to collect.  Because of the sheer numbers available at the time of release, the cards may not be the most valuable cards in circulation.  However, as time passes, some of these cards may become very valuable as collector items or cards that are reprinted in later sets.  The Gym Leaders make every effort to keep trainers at the Gym supplied with cards that are playable for the current Modified Format.  With that in mind, we have rotated out league promo cards that will be lost in the coming rotation by Play!Pokemon to the Black & White-on format.  We have not updated the list of promos for a while.  So, here is what is currently available at the Gym. Fincastle Spring Battle Roads This Sunday!

It’s almost here!  The first ever Pokemon Premier Event to come to Fincastle takes place this Sunday, June 10th.  Spring Battle Roads are the last tournament series prior to the National Championships which take place this summer.  The event will be held in the Fincastle Community Center (next to the Courthouse).  Battle Roads are a great opportunity to test out a new deck idea or refine your favorite one.  These are fun, laid back events where those who are interested in the competitive tournaments that the Gym Leaders travel to can see for themselves what they are like.  The Gym Leaders know that this is a busy time of the year, but we hope all who can will come out and help us have a great turnout.  Now that we have one, we definitely want to keep them coming back to our hometown in the future.  Here’s the low down…..
